Was sind Pips?
Ein Pip ist eine Kursveränderung um einen für den betroffenen Markt spezifischen Wert. Er ist eine Standardeinheit, um zu messen, wie stark sich der Kurs eines Markts verändert hat.
Die ursprüngliche Definition eines Pips war gewissermaßen "die kleinste Einheit, um die sich der Kurs eines Wertes ändern kann". Mit den präziseren Methoden der Kursmessung unserer Zeit jedoch ist diese Erklärung nicht mehr wirklich anwendbar. Traditionell wurden Kurse mit einer festgelegten Anzahl an Nachkommastellen genannt - gängigerweise vier davon -, und ein Pip war nach dieser heute veralteten Definition eine Kursbewegung um einen Punkt der letzten aufgezählten Nachkommastelle. Viele Broker geben die Kurse ihrer Instrumente heutzutage mit fünf Nachkommastellen an, was dazu führt, dass ein Pip nicht immer die letzte Nachkommastelle einer Kursangabe darstellt.
Pips sind auch weiterhin eine über alle Broker und Plattformen hinweg standardisierte Einheit, wodurch sie sehr nützlich bei der einheitlichen Messung von Werten aus verschiedenen Quellen und zwischen verschiedenen Tradern sind, was Verwirrung vermeidet. Ohne eine solche standardisierte Einheit würden Trader sprichwörtlich Äpfel mit Birnen vergleichen, wenn es um alltägliche Themen wie Punkte oder Ticks geht.

Was bedeutet Pip?
Manche behaupten, dass der Begriff Pip ursprünglich von der Bezeichnung Percentage-In-Point (Prozentsatz-im-Punkt) abgeleitet wurde, aber hierbei handelt es sich vermutlich um einen allgemeinen Irrglauben. Andere nehmen an, Pip steht für Price Interest Point.
Ungeachtet seiner unklaren Herkunft, erlaubt es der Pip dem Trader, mit anderen Tradern über Kursentwicklungen zu sprechen und dabei auf eine gemeinsame Basis der Werte zurückgreifen zu können. Mit dem Basis Point(kurz Bip) verhält es sich ähnlich, nur dass sich dieser auf kleinere und somit präzisere Werte bezieht. Damit lässt sich beantworten, welchen Zweck Pips erfüllen - es fällt sehr viel leichter, von 55 Pips zu sprechen, als auf die umständliche Formulierung "0.0055" zurückgreifen zu müssen, wenn man eine Kursbewegung diskutiert.
Wie groß sind Pips?
Für die meisten Währungspaare beschreibt ein Pip eine Bewegung der vierten Nachkommastelle. Die auffälligste Ausnahme sind hierbei FX-Paare, die den japanischen Yen miteinbeziehen - in diesem Fall ist ein Pip gängigerweise eine Bewegung um die zweite Nachkommastelle.

Wenn Sie Ihre Positionsgröße mit einem Pip multiplizieren, können Sie den Wert eines Pips errechnen. Angenommen, Sie traden EUR/USD und entscheiden sich, ein Lot zu kaufen. Ein Lot ist 100.000 Dollar wert, ein Pip beschreibt eine Größe von 0,0001 für EUR/USD - der Wert einer Bewegung um einen Pip ist also 100.000 x 0.0001 = 10$.
Wenn Sie nun im EUR/USD bei einem fiktiven Kurs von 1.6650 ein Lot kaufen und die Position später bei 1.6660 verkaufen, errechnet sich der Kursunterschied wiefolgt:
1.16660 - 1.16650 = 0.00010
Anders ausgedrückt, erreichen Sie einen Gewinn von 1 Pip. Dieser ist, wie wir bereits zuvor festgestellt haben, 10$ wert. Wenn wir dieses Beispiel aus einem anderen Blickwinkel erneut betrachten, wird noch deutlicher, was ein Pip im Trading ausmacht.
So funktionieren Forex Pips
Sie haben also eine Position bei 1.16650 eröffnet und einen Kontrakt gekauft. Effektiv haben Sie 100.000 Euro gekauft. Nominell haben Sie Dollar verkauft, um Euro einzukaufen. Der Wert des Dollars, den Sie fiktiv verkaufen, wird durch den Wechselkurs bestimmt.
EUR 100,000 x 1.16650 USD/EUR = USD 116,650
Sie haben Ihre Position daraufhin bei 1.6660 geschlossen. Nominell geschieht hier das gegenteil der Transaktion zuvor - Sie verkaufen Euro um Dollar einzukaufen.
EUR 100,000 x 1.16660 USD/EUR = USD 116,660
Sie haben in diesem Beispiel 166.650 Dollar verkauft, und durch das Schließen des Trades wieder 166.660 Dollar zurückerhalten, für einen Profit von 10 US-Dollar. Dies verdeutlicht, dass eine Kursbewegung um einen Pip effektiv einen Wert von 10$ hat.
Dieser Wert des Pips lässt sich über alle FX Paare anwenden, die mit vier Nachkommastellen angegeben werden - eine Kursbewegung um einen Pip kommt einem Wert von 10 Einheiten der Notierungswährung (also der zuletzt genannten Währung) gleich, bei einer angenommenen Positionsgröße von einem Lot (was immer 100.000 Einheiten der Basiswährung, also der zuerst genannten Währung, entspricht). Eine Bewegung um 10 Pips ist dementsprechend 100 Einheiten der Notierungswährung wert, eine Bewegung um 100 Pips entspricht 1.000 Einheiten der Notierungswährung, und so weiter.

USD/JPY als Beispiel für die Verwendung von Pips
Angenommen, Sie verkaufen 2 Lot im USD/JPY bei einem fiktiven Kurswert von 113.607. Da ein Lot im USD/JPY 100.000$ wert sind, verkaufen Sie durch diese Order 2 x 100.000$, um 2x 100.000 x 113.607 = 22.721.400 Yen einzukaufen.
Der Kurs bewegt sich gegen Sie und Sie entscheiden sich, bei 114.107 die Position zu schließen, um Ihre Verluste zu minimieren. Ein Pip im USD/JPY entspricht einer Kursbewegung der zweiten Nachkommastelle - der Kurs hat sich um 0.50 bewegt, also um 50 Pips.
Sie haben die Position von 2 Lot im USD/JPY bei 114.107 geschlossen. Um 200.000$ bei diesem Kurs zurückzukaufen, müssen Sie 2 x 100.000 x 114.107 = 22.821.400 JPY aufwenden. Da dies 100.000 JPY mehr sind, als Sie ursprünglich in US-Dollar ausgegeben haben, um die Position zu eröffnen, haben Sie einen Verlust von 100.000 JPY gemacht.
100.000 JPY für eine 50-Pip Bewegung zu verlieren, bedeutet, dass Sie 100.000/50 = 2.000 JPY pro Pip verloren haben. Da Sie eine Position von 2 Pip gehalten haben, ist das ein Pip-Wert von 1.000 Yen pro Lot.

Dies deutet an, dass es sich um Pip-Bruchteile handelt. Der Unterschied zwischen Bid- und Offer-Kurs beträgt 0,8 Pips. Wenn Sie nun bei diesem Kurs eine Order eröffnen und sofort wieder schließen würden, müssten Sie den Spread von 0,8 aufwenden.

Bitte beachten Sie, dass das Fenster Order ändern ein Drop-down-Menü aufweist, mit dem Sie bestimmte Abstände an Punkten direkt auswählen können. Es muss hier zwischen Punkten und Pips unterschieden werden. Die Punkte in diesem Drop-down-Menü beziehen sich auf die fünfte Nachkommastelle und stellen damit je ein Zehntel Pip dar. Wenn Sie hier 50 Punkte auswählen, kommt das einem Order-Level mit einem Abstand von 5 Pips gleich.

Exkurs: Terminologie im CFD Trading
Wenn Sie neben Forex auch CFDs auf Aktien, Rohstoffe, Indizes, Anleihen oder ETFs traden möchten, dann fragen Sie sich womöglich, ob es in diesen Märkten ebenfalls Pips gibt. Tatsächlich ergeben Pips wenig Sinn, wenn es um Märkte wie z.B. den Aktienmarkt geht, da es bereits eine existierende Terminologie für Kursänderungen in diesem Fall gibt: Pence und Cent.

Die ganzen Zahlen bei der Kursangabe repräsentieren den Kurs in USD und die Nachkommastellen sind die entsprechenden Cents. Dieses System ist intuitiv und verständlich, auch für Trading-Einsteiger. Daher war es nicht notwendig, spezialisierte Begriffe wie Pips für Aktien einzufügen - allerdings wird im Marktjargon hin und wieder der allgemeine Begriff Tick verwendet, der eine Kursbewegung um die kleinstmögliche Einheit darstellt (in diesem Fall also 1 Cent).
